Pawprints
Dark clouds stain the sky
like bruised blackberries,
summer rains pass through
uplifted oak branches,
rinsing the air before they depart.
A small stream whispers
into the Sangamon River,
the red-eyed sun sparkles along
the wavetops and silty shoreline
like pawprints of fallen stars.
