The Body

The body wants to be in love,
but the heart says, “Wait.
The sky might turn dark, today,
or never again. The kitchen
is mostly stocked. Why ever
go outside yourself when
there’s misery enough in here
for us all?” The secret is telling
your name without hitting
the consonants too hard.
A time you’d rather not mention
nailed onto soapboard. The eyes,
impassive as a crossed leg.
You say, “Open, for me,
just once, but never close.”
