Arvilla Fee

The Skin I’m In

all glass and steel and stone,
sharp edges that say,
stay over there;
I refract light,
deflect questions;
no one sees past
opaque windowpanes.
But inside—
            but inside—
I am tall, white-barked
birch trees,
birds on branches
trilling lullabies
to their babies:
I am liquid moon
poured into a pond,
crickets crying
in the cattails.
            Inside
I am home.
